Isaí’s story
BLOSSOMING IS THE NEXT STEP
The energy then-6-year-old Isaí had for running before his accident can only be compared to his determination to blossom today. Just as no one could stop him on the soccer field a few months ago, today no one can stop him – or his family – in their fight to improve his health.
For many, last summer was just another vacation, but for Isaí and his parents, it marked the beginning of a long journey that is still ongoing. The journey began at a birthday party – kids running everywhere, laughter and shouts filling every corner with joy. No one could have imagined that something bad would happen in such a joyful setting, yet it did.
While Isaí and his friends were playing tag, a metal pole that had been leaning against a building fell on his head, causing severe injuries. Isaí lost sight in his left eye and suffered a traumatic brain injury.
IsaÍ’s accident was a life-altering moment that’s led to four different surgeries – and many hours of supportive therapies.
But from the moment Isaí and his family first walked through the doors at the Emergency Department at Children's Health℠, they’ve always felt deeply cared for by each member of his care team, including neurosurgeons, nurses, physical and occupational therapists and Child Life specialists.
“When we first arrived, we were terrified. But seeing how well Isaí has been cared for has alleviated some of the fear and hardship from everything we've undergone. At Children's Health, I always know that Isaí is going to be OK — and that each of his medical procedures is getting us one step closer to where we need to be,” said Isaí’s mom, Alejandra.
Throughout this entire process, Isaí has never been alone. He has been surrounded not only by professionals committed to his recovery but also by people like Nurse Madeline, who understands the emotional needs of children in the hospital. She goes above and beyond to make his experience easier, like bringing the gaming console to his room so he can play his favorite game before a stressful procedure. His physical therapist, Kaley, brings fun activities to help him forget his wheelchair and enjoy the games he once loved. And let’s not forget the pet therapy sessions that make him laugh, help him relax and ease his anxiety.
Several months have passed since his accident, and Isaí, now 7 years old, continues to teach us about resilience, facing each step of his recovery without losing sight of the things he loves.
Today, Isaí is a LEGO master, obsessed with the NFL, back to reading, and his math skills are better than ever — nearly matching his grade level. Now, he dreams of becoming a police officer and keeps building magical worlds in his favorite video game.
Just like Isaí, many children hold on to the hope of blossoming this spring. That’s why your donation matters so much. Your support helps Children's Health make the impossible possible for the next generation of kids so they can focus on being incredible.
